What Is Cryptomining?
MikroTik is a leading Latvian ISP. The business was started in 1996 by focusing on selling off new equipment in fast-growing markets around the world. With time however, the company has branched out into other areas of expertise. They currently offer Linux based equipment for their clients, Cryptomining.
What is it about Microtik routers that draw so much attention from security professionals? In essence, the company’s product line is marketed towards small and medium sized businesses that need to manage their own networks. The security services that are offered by mikrotik routers are particularly attractive to small businesses that do not have the budget to buy their own systems, or that simply lack the IT skills to deal with the problems involved in managing their own networks. Because the technology used is easy to implement in house, the costs associated with maintaining a server are also low. This is one of the many reasons that small business owners are attracted to this technology. Mikrotik also boasts a large customer base with strong support from its user community.
There are two main categories of routers from microtik – WAN and LAN. A WAN router facilitates connectivity to the internet – whether intranet or the internet itself. A LAN router facilitates connection to local area networks (LANs) – either within a company’s own internal network or any other network, such as an intranet.
For most small businesses, a WAN or LAN connection is sufficient. However, some might find it useful to use a Linux OS for their WAN connections, especially if they will be connecting several computers to the internet at the same time or to several servers at different locations. This enables them to avoid the costs of buying and maintaining a Windows server, which can be quite expensive.
One of the drawbacks of using microtik routers and software is that it is not immune to malware attacks. Viruses and malware have long since been a problem for routers and for people who run them. There are several security measures that can be taken to prevent such attacks and to defend against them.
One of these security measures is encryption of data. Encryption is often a complicated affair, and it is best to have the WAN and LAN connections protected by means of another method entirely. That is why cryptomining was developed. With cryptomining, a WAN or LAN connection to the database servers of a business can be encrypted so that only those people who need access to the database and who know the password can gain access. Using such a system means that an attacker who wants to access the database cannot access it, and that a server must be completely destroyed before it can be attacked.
