Types of Building That Are Commonly Used
A building, or establishment, is basically a building with a specific roof and/or walls standing permanently in one location, for example a factory or home. Most buildings are constructed over time, and the designs are updated periodically. Buildings have been adapted across time for many reasons, from building materials readily available, to specific weather conditions, to land rates, ground conditions, etc… In fact, modern construction techniques and technologies allow builders to build any type of structure that may be imagined.
There are two main types of buildings used today: private dwellings and public buildings. Private dwellings are usually mansions, townhouses, or large apartments. They include those built for the sole use of the owner(s). Public buildings are places of business, schools, offices, hospitals, shopping malls, etc.
A building’s roof is what most people think of when they imagine a building. They are generally attached to the wall studs, or are part of the wall itself. If the building is flat, the roof may extend to a specified corner. The number of stories a building has depends on its height. The taller the structure, the longer its roofs are. However, because the building’s weight depends on the weight of the people inside, buildings can become very tall and very heavy, if that is a concern in the area where it is located.

There are various types of materials that are used to construct residential buildings. The most commonly used materials are wood, concrete, bricks, stone, glass, aluminum, steel, and various types of plastics. All of these materials can be used in residential buildings, as well as in commercial buildings. One major difference between residential and commercial building is the use of external walls to separate one area from another.
In a building that is attached to the ground, usually the roof is supported by poles. If the building is on its own foundation, the foundation walls may also support the roof. The roof is then supported by the walls, which rest on the foundation. Walls and foundations are not usually required in an open-sided building. However, this can be added in case of a building that does have an independent foundation.
Some buildings use different types of construction materials for their walls. For instance, walls may be built from timber, bricks, concrete, sheet metal, or plastic. Windows and skylights can be built using different types of materials as well. Windows are usually made from concrete, sheet metal, or timber. There are many other types of construction materials that can be used to build a building, including, glass, stone, and plastic.
