The Impact of COVID 19 on New Renewable Energy Policies

Faculty of Engineering, Electrical Engineering Study Program, Medan Medan University held a webinar event titled “The Role of Renewable Energy in Facing the Covid-19 Pandemic” on Monday, June 15, 2020, through the Zoom application and live streaming on the University of Medan Area YouTube channel. The resource person of this webinar is Mr. Dr. Suriadi, ST., M.Sc., IPM who is a researcher in the field of Renewable Energy and Lecturer at Syiah Kuala University.
This webinar was held publicly and was attended by hundreds of participants from universities throughout Indonesia and abroad, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, contractors, and researchers. The program began with remarks by moderator Dr. Ir. Dina Maizana, MT, activity report by Head of Electrical Engineering Syarifah Muthia Putri, ST., MT, remarks by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Dr. Grace Yuswita Harahap, MT, and the opening ceremony by the Medan Area University Chancellor Prof. Dr. Dadan Ramdan, M.Eng., M.Sc.
New renewable energy (EBT) is an important topic to be a solution for the independence of electricity in Indonesia. The guest speaker Dr. Suriadi, ST., M.Sc., IPM said that the government also took part in realizing the use of EBT by issuing several policies so that the use of EBT in 2025 was 23%.
During this co-19 pandemic, the community experienced an increase in electricity consumption due to the existence of WFH (Work From Home) and SFH (Study From Home). This change in the pattern of electrical energy loads has led to increased public electricity bills.
Indonesia’s abundant natural resources in terms of hydropower, wind power, and solar power can be utilized to produce electrical energy as a solution to overcome changes in the electrical energy load pattern. Dr. Suriadi, ST., M.Sc., IPM explained the technical linking of EBT generated with the PLN network and the positive impact obtained in the form of reducing the cost of electricity bills. This is a solution and the role of EBT in the COVID pandemic 19 that is happening in Indonesia today.
The event went well until the end of the entire series of events. All participants’ questions were answered clearly by the speakers and received very positive responses from all participants.
